Those babies we’ve been watching grow all of these years are finally starting to actually grow up.  This was made evident this past August when I asked Michelle what (soon to be) nine-year-old Sage would like as a gift.  She drew a blank.  His list was short and inexpensive, and everything on it had already been planned for or purchased.  So we turned to a traditional crowd pleaser: cold hard cash.  Except, I hate giving cash in a card.  How boring is that?  I remember as I got older the stack of gifts got smaller, and eventually it was reduced to a stack of cards containing cash or gift certificates.  It made the whole gift giving and receiving thing not quite as fun.  So when I thought of cash for Sage, I also had to think of a clever idea.

So I taped 25 one dollar bills end to end creating a really long chain of ones.  Then I wound it up in a loose roll and attached a tab to the end and stuck the whole thing into a wrapped gift box with the tab saying ‘pull me’ sticking out of the top.

It was really fun to watch Sage as he pulled and pulled and pulled what looked like a lot of money out of the box.  His smile grew and grew as he wondered when the roll would end.  After the 25th bill made its exit, Gigi came up to me with warm, smiling eyes.  “Mommy?  That’s what I want for my birthday too.”  Here we go!
