Back when we lived in Bellingham in our old craftsman home, Bradley made built-in bookshelves on all of the walls. It was beautiful and really gave us the opportunity to have free access to all of our books. When we lived in our temporary house, before moving into this one, we did not do a whole lot to make the place feel like home. During the three years we lived there, I kind of forgot how lovely it can be to have a sanctuary bedroom – that is, a place you can’t wait to go to at night. A place that is calm, organized and lovely. So, this is what our bedroom looked like ‘before’:

In this picture you can see the classy-as-a-nightstand chair holding junk and the wobbly side table holding a huge tv with wires trailing down behind it. The funny thing? I didn’t even realize how terrifically ugly this was until I took the picture! Junk pile in corner? Ugh! So, my dear Bradley went to Ikea and bought me this wonderful, sliding door bookshelf/tv center for our room. It seemed too lavish and fancy, but now? I am not complaining!

The idea for me is to leave our bedroom nice. Nothing on the bed, nothing on top of the shelves (that is not a decoration), dirty clothes happen in the closet and bathroom, and hopefully our room will stay clutter free and sanctuary-ish. For Christmas, Bradley went out and bought me a new bed and mattress set.  He went with king size (!) and a foam mattress.  I love it!  Here is the bed side of the room:

I think the best part of this picture is Bradley’s side of the bed.  Because the bed is so close to the wall, he had to come up with some creative night stand solutions.  He found these really cool bookshelves that appear to be free floating books on the walls:

I also really like our new lamp/alarm clocks. They are intended to ease a sleeper into a natural wake-up cycle as the light turns on 30 minutes before the actual alarm goes off, then slowly brightens until it is at full strength, mimicking the sunrise.  I find that by the time the light is full, I am naturally awake, which is really nice when we live in an area where it is so dim and dark for much of the year.  The other thing that I like is that it has an alarm of birds chirping as an option, so light and birds wake me up in the morning instead of a darkened fumble to turn off the buzzing and beeping alarm.  I really like it!

Now, I feel selfish and greedy as I can’t wait for the kids to go to bed every night so I can head up to bed to revel in my new bedroom!
