Mother’s Day

May 12, 2013 by Tamara

I was selfish this morning and allowed myself the pleasure of a long run. I was trying to hit five miles and just came shy of it with 4.7. 4.7, by the way, is my new record for distance. And taking 54 minutes to run it was the longest I’ve ran without stopping. Kinda makes me think I don’t need to stop so much anymore. Kinda makes me think that running a half marathon or a 10K might not be that big of a deal in the future.
The best things about my run today:
1. I ran as slow as I needed to, focusing on distance over time. When I run slow enough I can go forever.
2. Now I can go out to Chinese food tonight and eat my favorite (vegetarian) sweet and sour pork, almond chicken and chicken chow mein (excellent greasy-spoon, vegetarian, Chinese place called Bamboo Garden in Seattle) without having to worry about the calorie intake. I burned 1787 calories on that run (according to this site). Crazy, right? But it gets me some yums tonight that I rarely partake in!

Yesterday we took a hike down to the Puget Sound via the Meadowdale Park trail. When we got there, it was busy but beautiful. We quickly shed our clothes down to our bathing suits and waded, swam and played until my son discovered barnacles and thought they were on legs and were going to start crawling all over him, slicing him up with their knives. Seriously- NO IDEA where that came from. NONE. We had to leave, he was so distraught. We came home and hunkered down, made a high calorie dessert then drifted to dreamland. My kids are great, my husband is great. Mother’s Day has been lovely.

Goals? How’d I do? Despite taking a few days off I met my running goal. I ran 12.5 miles last week and hiked a few more. Regarding my abs… I would rather run for an hour that do my abs work for five minutes. That is how much I hate working my abs. Stupid, huh? I did my abs workout two times. My brain is scrambling for a third time so at least I’d have made 60% but I didn’t. I did it twice, not five times. Perhaps I need to adjust while I get used to the workout. I’m disappointed in myself. This is the first goal I haven’t made. It may be a small issue, but I still need to remember to follow through with my promises to myself. If I don’t hold myself accountable, who will? Then before I know it I’m 340 again. Blech.
Goals this week:
Run or hike 15 miles – yup- upping it by three miles to extend my distance a little bit.
Abs 3 times this week. If I do four I’ll let myself get a reward at Old Navy with my Mother’s Day gift cards. 🙂
