Mommy! We should make a rainbow cake!

Of course, coming from my sweet little four year old’s sweet toothed mouth it sounded more like ‘Mommy! We sood make wainbow kake!’

So we did. We made a basic yellow cake and then added food coloring then globbed it in the pans. A swirl was attempted but it didn’t turn out too swirly. We were fine with that. Jude chose blue icing, and of course, rainbow sprinkles.

It was all going swimmingly. Sprinkles on, photos being taken, I turn away for a moment, like seriously, I was standing RIGHT there and couldn’t figure out when this happened:

After that we decided we had enough sprinkles on and it was time to slice her open!

Then the eating happened. And oh my, my darling boy, loved eating the cake every bit as much as he loved making it. Perhaps even more! Bon appetit!

We have about two weeks ( if I’m being generous) until school starts.  We startled at this realization since we had pretty well settled into an endless summer sloth of waking, playing, breakfasting, playing, lounging, bronzing, swimming, eating more, laying around more…  you get the idea.  We were being LAZY Littlejohns!  It is easy to get lazy when the kids don’t want to change out of their pajamas, when the sun keeps on shining on those lounge chairs out back, when you have days and days and days ahead of you.  That said, only 3/4 of the Lj’s have really been Lazy, Bradley has been busily finishing up fencing and brainstorming/sketching/drafting new graphics.  I know, poor us.

So upon the realization that our summer was melting away we got our rears in gear and started having super days of fun.  And oh my goodness, they HAVE been exactly that.  These hot summer days turn into beautiful summer nights that are full of warm and energetic air.  THe kind of air that makes you want to throw your arms out to the side and spin in the middle of a field.

So a few days ago we went to the beach, came home and ate lunch, then we went to a park and then we went and saw Madagascar 3 at The Crest.  ALL of it was so fun that when we walked out of the theater we didn’t want it to end.  That soft, warm air made Bradley and I feel like teenagers, it made us want to act like them too.  When we were teenagers on a night like that, with a license and a car at our disposal, we would have headed into the city to see if something was happening.  We did exactly that.  We headed from North Seattle to downtown.  We were going to ride the new sky wheel.  The windows were down and Coldplay magically came on the radio, we sang at the top of our lungs about when we ruled the world, about choirs singing; we felt saturated with joy and youth.  As we got down the 1st Ave the smell hit us first.  Beer.   Liquor.  Weed.  Hempfest!  It was just emptying out people were trickling and wobbling their way down the waterfront.  The sky wheel had a line and the people, while the peaceful variety under the influence, weren’t the crowd we wanted to dive onto with our 8 and 4 year old children.  We quickly changed gears and headed to the Space Needle for Bradley and Jude’s first ever trip to the top of the needle and Gigi’s and my first trip to the top at night.

    It was beautiful.

The next night found us making a late night junk food run followed by a sunset skinny dip at Denny Beach.  Could life get any better?  I sure do love my summers with my family.

Jude went with Daddy to the store the other day and got to pick out a prize at the end of the trip. It was down to Evil Dr. Pork Chop, Lego set, an iPad batman game or mustaches and a flimsy pirate sword. I’m sure you see where this is going…

He ‘sneaked’ in from the car upon returning home and stood in front of me, all smug and incognito. I ‘startled’ and asked who this strange man in front of me was. Jude is the king and he reaches up all cool as a cucumber and slo-mo peels his mustache back revealing his true identity. At that point he loses his cool demeanor and asks, “Did you know it was me?! I had on a mustache!”. Of course I answered that I was shocked at his true identity!

After that he ran around hanging out mustaches until everyone was walking around with black caterpillars on our lips. Well worth the dollar, I think. Well played, Jude. You made the right choice, Buddy. 🙂

We finally took the steep trail down to the lake and know what? Despite being sweaty and gross at the end we had a lovely time!
