Wonder
11.14.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on WonderAlright, alright I wanted to do this song because Tamara brought it up, even though I already did a Colin song last week. This song is special because it was the song we sang to Jude in utero. It is funny because we thought we spent all the A-list baby songs by dedicating them to Guinevere’s babyhood, but Jude’s canon seems to be equally excellent.
I love this song because it is WEIRD. It is strange that this little thing springs up into being, and it wiggles and writhes and slowly makes its presence known to you. That subcutaneous experience… that an elbow moves across the inside of the belly creating the effect of a shark fin in the skin is amazing. Seeing a squirrel in the ultrasound is jawdropping and this song, while swarmy, captures that feeeling for me. I think swarmy has a big place in the set of emotions a family experiences… cynics be damned. 😉

Halloween
11.12.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on HalloweenWe did celebrate Halloween. And I wouldn’t be a good blogger mommy if I didn’t post a few pictures of one of the best holidays that exists in the world.
Jude is classic. CLASSIC. He is Super Why – a super hero from the PBS show Super Why. Know what Super Why’s special power is? He has the power to read. But the important thing to note is that Jude is wearing a Robin costume with a shirt over it and a pair of blue underwear. I love this detail. The underwear pulled over the tights. Perfect!
We also had a Rapunzel (AKA Tangled Princess, in our house) and picked up a Smurfette as we headed down the road. Gigi, of course, is our princess in every way. She was thrilled to go as Tangled Girl. Smurfette is actually Madeline, our neighbor whose parents were out of town. Sadly, her hat came off as we were heading home ne’re to be seen again. Seriously, we combed the neighborhood that night AND the next day… But she was really cute. She kept saying how she was sure to be warm as she was wearing two layers. But… about halfway through our trek she did decide that the two layers weren’t enough and gratefully took one of the jackets that Bradley ran home to get. It was stinking cold! I know because I was Wonder Woman! That gal does not wear a whole heck of a lot, and she must get cold pretty quickly! Sadly for you, Dear Reader, we ‘forgot’ to take pictures of Bradley dressed as Wolverine and me as the mighty Amazon woman. Awww. Too bad.
Tricks and Treats were so plentiful that we ended up dumping the candy into other containers as the night wore on. At the end of it all we came up with 3 gallon zip bags of candy. I hid them away from ourselves, as we are known for racing through our Halloween candy. As things stand now, we are only one bag down. How’s that for self control? So, Happy (belated) Halloween!

Heavenly Morning
11.11.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Heavenly MorningOK. The Bass? Best Birthday gift I could have gotten Tamara. It is so much fun to play together. We recorded another version of Just Like Heaven together, and not only is it cool to see her fingers doing the walking, it is SEXY to hear Tami kick the song off with that little riff. Plus now that there is a rhythm section in the house I get to do some guitar noodling in the break!
I left the witty banter in because I always love it on Beatles records or demos when you hear them speak. Plus it will be archeologically significant to us when we are older than dirt and trying to demonstrate to our space age grandchildren that there really was some vestige of interesting in our younger selves.

Just Like Heaven
11.11.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Just Like HeavenI can remember sitting in my grandparents basement trying to figure out this song with my friend Mike while in high school. We never really nailed it. But Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me was such an awesome album and this song in particular seemed so good to me at the time that The Smiths should have written it (if only Morrissey wrote lyrics where the protagonist actually gets a little something for his troubles). Anyhoo… I realized just a bit ago that I didn’t close the song with the title line but I am too lazy to redo this since it is supposed to be just sketching so consider it an aesthetic decision to leave the listener wanting a little something more.
As you can see I got out my vinyl copy of the album… best album art EVAH! and showed it to Jude, who seemed to agree with my EVAH! statement (although what does he know? I think this was his first vinyl encounter besides the flying records on Julius the Monkey’s ‘Kites are Fun’ video).

Oh My Goodness I Remember the Fringe and Other Things!
11.10.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Oh My Goodness I Remember the Fringe and Other Things!George Michael. Faith. I remember.
Why am I writing in such a staccato fashion? Because I am embarrassed to be sharing that I like George.
There. I said it. Yes. You heard me.
I. Like. George.
As proof here is me trying to croon Faith
