Bicycle Song nay Apology Song
11.09.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Bicycle Song nay Apology SongIt has gotten so easy to record music I thought I could do it as a daily exercise… spend a few minutes and hash out a song that wasn’t in my repertoire or had dropped out of my soupy brain. Five days in I’ve finally gotten the courage to release this little lump of coal in the rough: Apology Song, forever known to my mind as the Bicycle Song by the Decemberists. Whatever shortcomings, I am just proud that I would actually let someone hear me doing stuff again. Enjoy. Or not. Whatever. 😉

Jack-O-Lanterns
10.31.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Jack-O-LanternsPumpkin carving is big here. BIG. Our kids can’t wait until the end of October arrives and they get to carve. I think it has a lot to do with them being allowed to use a KNIFE to cut out THEIR own designs. This year they each got to carve two. Yeah, we are living the high life.
First, it was my job to cut off their tops or bottoms and dig all the guts out. While the babies don’t have an aversion to cleaning the goo, it does prolong the whole process. So after they’d gone at it for a while, I took over and scraped the insides. But honestly? That is about the only thing I did do to the pumpkins. From there, Guinevere and Jude took over.
Jude adores pumpkin carving. Earlier this month we went over to some friends’ house to carve pumpkins for fun. Once Jude had the little knife in his hand, he sat at the table cutting and re-cutting his pumpkin for a good two hours. By the time we were finished, the pumpkin had three or four faces on it. Tonight, he did the same thing, except he just made one face on each pumpkin. One has a huge mouth with tiny eyes, and the other is a cute little howly face.
Guinevere was less process and more product oriented. She decided to go with the princess theme – Leia and Rapunzel. Of course, for Leia’s hair we needed little cinnamon buns that were to be made of mini pumpkins. That creative little girl came up with that solution on her own. Clever clever.
By the time they were done, we ended up with Big Mouth, Tiny, Rapunzel and Princess Leia. Our porch is sure to be the talk of the neighborhood, thanks to our own little creative Halloweeners!

Mama Played Bass, Daddy Sang Tenor
10.29.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Mama Played Bass, Daddy Sang TenorFor about a year now I have been taking guitar lessons. With that in mind, for about a year now we’ve also been talking about buying a guitar for me, not one that I’d have to borrow from Bradley. We made our way to a guitar shop several weeks ago where we set about looking for the just right guitar for Gigi and for me. Finding the guitar for Gigi was easy, and we found one for me as well… But an hour into our guitar shopping adventure Bradley walked over with an acoustic bass, he put it in my hands, picked up a guitar himself and started to play. While he played he instructed me on the chords to play and the strumming style that should go along with it. In moments we were ‘jamming’ together – my first time really playing just for fun, not just for practice, with my husband! I felt like I was a part of something cool! It was so much fun that I decided that I would be the chick who plays the bass in the band. We walked out that day with a few guitars… (Christmas is coming, people, and I still need a guitar, and Bradley’s guitar that he’s had from the time he was 16 has seen better days, nuff said). So last night, I got my bass, and this morning I got to play it for real. I’ll admit that both Bradley and I have been spending time late at night sneaking our new toys, so when I opened it I was already playing U2, Christina Perry and Woodie Guthrie! Ha!
In addition to my new toy, I also have some kid styled necklaces to sport on those days when I need some color in my wardrobe and a few awesome cards from those same creative little cats. Happy birthday to ME!

Just a Little Green
10.29.11 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Just a Little GreenI recently spent an afternoon clearing the garden of the delicious and lush greenery we had managed to grow this summer.
I was amazed at how many plants we put in, how dense our garden was, what a turn-out of color and vibrancy we saw in our virgin garden beds. Glads were everywhere, and our dahlia bulbs were plentiful as I pulled them out of the ground to store for next spring.
It was fun, really, to chop all of it down mercilessly at first. Then the realization set in that this chopping and clearing was symbolic of a long winter of grey skies and brown foliage ahead of us. So I stopped. The garden clearing, though nearly complete, has been discontinued while I hang onto the idea that if there is green in the garden it is still summer.
Judging by today’s weather though, the green will be short lived before a winter’s frost is upon us. At which point we get to put up Christmas lights… Which sparkle and grow so prettily… And let’s not forget the tree, the stockings… Perhaps this winter business isn’t as bad as it seems… Hmmm… (Humming ‘It’s Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas’…)
