Mother’s Day
05.25.13 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Mother’s DayMy family treated me like a queen, a princess, the center of the world. Â The weekend was mine, and they catered to most of my whims. Â 🙂
Shopping…
Hiking…
Gardening…
Presents…
Swimming…
And I even got a really generous five mile run in!
On top of that? Â Bamboo Garden for dinner. Â Sweet and sour porkless pork? Â Uhmmm…. Â Yes. Â Now. Â Git in mah belly!
Being a mom seems like a pretty awesome deal. Â Yes, this stuff is cool, but the best part is these little people i get to hang out with all the time. Â Talk about the coolest people. Â I love being a parent, but beyond that, I love being a parent to these particular children. Â Jude with his sweet little kisses and funny jokes, Gigi with her tender voice and snuggly arms… Â What could be better than this?

Denny Beach
05.24.13 | Permalink | | Comments Off on Denny BeachThe first lake swim of the season usually hits us in late June or early July. Â This year, however, the first swim of the season came on an 85degree day in early May. Â After one sweaty day at school, we stripped down to our suits and made our way to Denny Beach – about five minutes from our house.
We warned the kids that the water was certain to be chilly. Â That, likely, there would be toes and feet int eh water but little else. Â We were wrong. Â WIthin minutes they were all in, swimming around, heads ducking under and water flying. Â Martha joined the fray and we were amazed at the gift of this beautiful, sunny spring day.

One of the people in this picture hit the milestone of losing one hundred pounds today.
The other one inspired her to do it.

The Big Test
04.30.13 | Permalink | | Comments Off on The Big TestAnd so it begins. Today our daughter joins the giant education machine where she will be assessed, categorized and statisticized into ready-made numbers for educators and politicians to use in a variety of ways. I not thrilled with the test taking. I’m not thrilled with the standardized test. I despise the stress and anxiety it causes the kids and the teachers. It is an incredibly stressful time for me… And I am 39. Not 9.
So what to do? In my class I make it a celebration. I request special foods like gogurts, string cheese and fresh fruit from the families for special snacks! We chew gum during the test! We take extra breaks! It’s fun! Never mind that pesky little booklet that you need to write in for two hours… Because when we are done there will be ICE CREAM! And I’m not even kidding.
I figure the least I can do for my own kid is give her a fancy schmancy lunch filled with jokes and sillies. She’s got brain food (top ramen), nutra nuggs (chik’ nuggets), smart pills (gummies), intelligence potion (juice), a banana which I called the MSP Masher…. Whatever that is.
She will be amazing. No matter what.
